Nowadays, I play a lot of Wario in Mario Party 10 on my Switch and some of Wario Land on the DS. I don't think I've ever seen his biker design from Wario Ware but it looked cool. The only familiarity I had with him was from Mario Party and the Sports games. I haven't played Wario in Smash nor did I play his own spin off games like Wario Land and WarioWare.
Wario certainly made quite the entrance in the Brawl announcement trailer. PLus, they've given her this energy whip thingy, now that's hype. She could be a less sluggish more nimble character than Samus and we don't get to use Samus's more natural abilities often in the Metroid series. Then there's the implications of the removal of her armor on how she could play in Smash. So getting a new form of this beloved character was a hype moment, especially the way in which she was revealed. More people were aware of the magnificent character, Samus Aran, during this time than they were back in the days of Smash 64. On the Gamecube, Metroid Prime 3 was also due to release shortly as a launch window Wii Title.

By 2006, the Metroid series had grown in popularity thanks to the Gameboy Advance entries and the Metroid Prime subseries. It may seem strange to some people that I think that an alternate persona or form of a character we already had is more hype than the original, but hear me out. Hats off to Sakurai and HALS Laboratory for Uprising! Pit didn't bring the hype to Smash, but instead, Smash brought the hype to Pit and Kid Icarus in general. Even without having much of a legacy, Pit looked like a hyped character. Both driving with the aesthetic of Brawl while also standing out from the rest of the cast. He was completely redesigned with a much more appealing anime look. The NES and Gameboy games may not have been able to pull that off, but Pit's appearance in Brawl alone somehow managed to revive that hope. It feels like it was supposed to become one of these ongoing flagship franchises for Nintendo. Unlike Ice Climbers, Kid Icarus feels like it was designed to follow in the footsteps of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Kirby.
I mean it still isn't, but at the time, it was a hair away from Ice Climbers in terms of relevance. When Brawl was revealed in 2006, Kid Icarus was not the most prolific franchise. Besides him being too broken and killing the Brawl scene, you gotta admit it's cool to see Meta Knight to join the field so he can have a rematch with our favorite pink puffball. The Kirby series needed more representation so I'm glad they started off with one of Kirby's most iconic anti-heroes, Meta Knight. What could be more hype to see Meta Knight, as the first newcomer for the Brawl roster. Man, the E3 Brawl reveal was so hyped to see all the four big icons shift into the Wii console, which means a new Smash Bros along with new characters.
It's also the first game to feature third-party guest characters! (Three more to go!)
